La
Rosière is a ski resort at 1850m above sea level in the Haute Tarentaise
valley. It is situated only 8kms from Italy by the Petit St. Bernard
pass and 25 kms from Bourg St. Maurice.
With
the resort being south facing it is spoilt for sunshine and yet still
has a remarkable snow record.
In Winter La Rosière has an extensive ski area, with the link
to La Thuile in Italy, giving over 140 kms of marked pistes and unlimited
off piste for all levels of skiing and snowboarding. One can even take
to the mountain summits by helicopter, an experience of a lifetime !
La Rosière is a favorite with families and especially for the
children ; The resort having the French « petits montagnards »
classification.
For
the mountain lovers there’s everything from the beautiful views,
the mountain strolls, hikes on snowshoes and, of course, the skiing and
snowboarding.
For the food lovers also La Rosière has plenty to offer being
the region for the famous Beaufort cheese and local dishes like fondues,
raclettes, tartiflettes and, on the other side of the mountain, pasta
pizzas and Chianti.
La Rosière is also steeped in tradition with the village originally
being an ‘alpage’ where the families used to ‘migrate’
with their animals during the Summer to make the most of the alpine pastures.
Today in the old part of the village the stone built houses stilll exist
with their slate roofs. Following on from the traditional mountain architecture
one can visit the many quaint hamlets on the slopes below La Rosière
with the beautiful chalets in stone, slate and wood.
In Summer, the resort and surrounding villages, being due south,
are rich in colour with the many varieties of montain flowers (orchids,
gentians, arnica etc) and not to mention the chalets draped in gereniums.
La
Rosière is also a natural adventure park with numerous activities
at hand. The traditional activities from rambling to rock climbing and
high mountain snow clad summits to atain But also newer activities including
mountain biking on the many marked runs, tennis, a 9 hole golf course,
pony trekking, rafting amongst others.
For the less energetic the cultural visits are numerous with beautiful
chapels, museums and of course the history of the St . Bernard and the
mountain pass.
